Cook Islands Vaka Marumaru Atua
Marumaru Atua, the Cook Island voyaging canoe, which sailed for 23 days across the Pacific Ocean from Rarotonga to Hawai'i to participate in the 13th Annual Festival of the Pacific Arts and Culture (FestPAC).
The Marumaru Atua's arrival in Hawai'i marked the beginning of a two-week period filled with vibrant cultural exchanges with other voyaging canoes from across the Pacific. These interactions highlighted the shared heritage and deep connections among Pacific Island nations, fostering mutual respect and understanding.
Among the dedicated crew of Cook Islanders were two Hawaiians from Kanehunamoku Voyaging Academy who completed the voyage to Hawai'i, symbolizing the unity and collaboration between our island communities. This shared experience not only strengthened the bonds between the Cook Islands and Hawai'i but also underscored the spirit of voyaging that connects all Pacific peoples.
As the festival concluded on June 15th, the Marumaru Atua set sail for home, this time with one Hawaiian voyager among their crew. This gesture of inclusion and representation further exemplifies the beautiful relationships forged through shared voyaging traditions and cultural exchanges.
The Marumaru Atua's journey is a testament to the resilience, skill, and cultural pride of the Pacific voyaging community. It serves as a powerful reminder of our ancestors' and Papa Mau remarkable navigational abilities and their enduring legacy that continues to inspire and unite us.
